Laikipia: Kenya's Quiet Safari, With Rhino on Foot and Room to Breathe

The Maasai Mara gets the headlines, and it deserves them. But north of Mount Kenya there's a high, wide plateau called Laikipia, where the safari feels softer and more private. You can walk out to find rhino with an armed ranger, ride a horse past zebra, and drive back to camp under the stars.

What is Laikipia? It's a plateau in northern Kenya made up of private and community conservancies such as Ol Pejeta, Lewa, Segera and Loisaba. It's home to some of Kenya's largest rhino populations and rare species like Grevy's zebra and wild dog, with far fewer vehicles than the Mara and activities parks don't allow.

Key facts

• Where: central and northern Kenya, on the plateau north and west of Mount Kenya, straddling the equator.
• Getting there: about 45 minutes by light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Lewa, and just under an hour to Nanyuki.
• Rhino: Ol Pejeta reported a record 240 rhinos at the end of 2025. Lewa and Borana together support more than 280.
• Best months: July to September, with December to March as a second dry window.
• What's different: night drives, guided walks, horseback and camel safaris, because conservancies aren't bound by national park rules.

Why Laikipia feels different

In a national park or reserve, you stay on the track, in the vehicle, in daylight. Laikipia's conservancies are privately or community managed, so the guiding opens up. Night drives, walking safaris, off-road driving, horse and camel safaris are all on the menu, and visitor numbers are kept low on each conservancy.

That doesn't mean thin wildlife. Africa Geographic describes Laikipia's wildlife densities as rivaling the Mara's. It's also, by their account, the only place in Kenya north of the equator with a viable wild dog population, and you can see Grevy's zebra here, the tall, narrow-striped zebra with the big round ears.

If the Mara is the big, cinematic safari, Laikipia is the one where you get to slow down. I think the best trips do both.

The conservancies, and their rhino

Rhino are the reason a lot of people come, and the numbers below come from the conservancies themselves.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta covers 90,000 acres near Nanyuki and calls itself the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, with more than 165 black rhino. By the end of 2025 its total rhino population had reached a record 240, with 25 calves born that year and eight straight years without a poaching incident.

It's also home to Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, and it's the only place in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees, at its chimpanzee sanctuary.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Lewa sits at the foot of Mount Kenya, and in 2013 UNESCO added it, along with the Ngare Ndare Forest, to the Mount Kenya World Heritage Site. As of September 2025, Lewa says that together with neighboring Borana Conservancy it supports more than 280 rhinos.

Loisaba and Segera, the newest rhino homes

Black rhino are doing well enough in Laikipia that some sanctuaries are running out of room. In early 2024, Kenya Wildlife Service moved 21 black rhino from Nairobi National Park, Ol Pejeta and Lewa to Loisaba Conservancy, which set aside 29,000 of its 58,000 acres for them. That made Loisaba Kenya's 17th rhino sanctuary.

In 2025 the same thing happened at Segera, a conservancy of about 50,000 acres, as part of a planned move of 21 eastern black rhino to ease crowding in older sanctuaries. Ol Pejeta reports that nine of its own black rhino went to Segera that year.

What you can do here

This is where Laikipia shines. Depending on the conservancy and lodge, you can:

• Track rhino on foot with a guide and ranger.
• Go out on a night drive for the animals you never see in daylight.
• Ride horses across the plateau. Sosian, on a 24,000-acre reserve, is known for its horseback safaris among zebra, elephant and buffalo.
• Take a camel safari, which Segera includes as a full-day outing and Loisaba offers as camel trekking.
• Look for wild dogs, which are elusive but present across the wider ecosystem.

Where to stay

All rates below are per person sharing, per night, as of October 2026, and they move with the season.

Segera Retreat. The art lover's pick. Segera has five garden villas and five private houses, some with their own pools, on its 50,000-acre conservancy, and the property is filled with contemporary African art from the Zeitz Collection. As of October 2026, rates start from about $1,980 per person per night.

Loisaba Tented Camp. A dozen tents on an escarpment with views across Laikipia toward Mount Kenya, plus Loisaba Star Beds nearby if you want to sleep out under the sky. Activities include day and night drives, bush walks, camel trekking, horse riding and lion tracking. As of October 2026, rates run from about $748 to $1,150 per person.

Lewa Safari Camp. Thirteen tented suites inside the Lewa conservancy, with game drives, walking safaris, horse riding and camel trekking. As of October 2026, rates run from about $535 to $989 per person.

Ol Pejeta Bush Camp. An Asilia camp on the Ewaso Ng'iro River, where elephants often come by. Rates include full board, house drinks, day and night drives and airstrip transfers. As of October 2026, rates run from $600 per person in April to $860 in the July to October peak.

Sosian Lodge. Seven rooms across four cottages on a 24,000-acre reserve, for the traveler who wants to see the plateau from the saddle. As of October 2026, safari packages start from about $690 per person per night.

Borana Lodge. On Borana Conservancy in eastern Laikipia, with game drives, bush walks, horseback riding, mountain biking and scenic flights. Ask me for current rates.
