Most travelers treat Amman as a transit point. Fly in, head to Petra, come back, fly out. I think that's a mistake. Amman is one of the most interesting cities in the Middle East: Roman ruins sit beside stylish cafés, the call to prayer drifts over rooftop bars, and the food alone is worth the stop.
Is Amman worth visiting? Yes, and it deserves at least two days. Walk the Citadel near sunset, eat your way through downtown (Hashem for falafel, Habibah for knafeh), spend an evening on Rainbow Street and cook with a Jordanian family. Stay at the Four Seasons or the St. Regis, and the Dead Sea is about an hour away.

The Citadel and Roman Theater
The Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a) is one of the most underappreciated archaeological sites in the Middle East. The Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace and the Jordan Archaeological Museum sit on top of a hill that looks out over the whole city.

Downhill from the Citadel, the 2nd-century Roman Theater is cut into the hillside and seats about 6,000 people. Go in the late afternoon, when the stone turns honey-colored and the downtown noise drifts up from the street.
