Every Caviar in the Air itinerary follows the same philosophy: slow travel, luxury accommodations, three-course meals with wine pairings, and experiences that balance depth with delight. Our Senegal journey is no exception.

"The most effective luxury itineraries in West Africa are those that build in emotional progression—beginning with historical reckoning, moving through cultural immersion, and culminating in celebration. This arc mirrors the psychological journey that heritage travelers undergo." — Journal of Luxury Tourism & Hospitality, Vol. 12, 2024

Here's exactly what seven days in Senegal looks like with us.

Day 1: Arrival in Dakar — Teranga Begins

Accommodation: Terrou-Bi Hotel (oceanfront suite)

Private black car transfer from Blaise Diagne International Airport. The drive into Dakar takes approximately 45 minutes—your first glimpse of Senegalese life through the window. Baobab trees, colorful market stalls, and the Atlantic Ocean appearing on your right.

Check in. Breathe. Meet the group for a welcome dinner on the hotel's ocean terrace. The menu features Senegalese-French fusion—think grilled thiof fish with a citrus beurre blanc, followed by mango crème brûlée. Wine pairings from French and South African vineyards.

Day 2: Gorée Island — Confronting History

Morning: Ferry to Gorée Island (20 minutes from Dakar's port). Private guided tour of the Maison des Esclaves, including the Door of No Return. Our guide is a local historian who provides context you won't find in any guidebook.

📊 Chart: Senegal Luxury Travel Costs — What to Budget (2025) Source: Virtuoso Luxe Report & Senegal Tourism Board | Category | Budget Range/Day | Notes | |----------|-----------------|-------| | Luxury Hotel | $200-$400 | Oceanfront suite at Terrou-Bi or equivalent | | Fine Dining (3-course) | $60-$120 | Including wine pairings | | Private Guide | $80-$150 | Bilingual, culturally trained | | Private Car & Driver | $100-$180 | Full-day with fuel | | Gorée Island Ferry + Guide | $45 | Round trip + historian | | Cultural Experiences | $50-$100 | Music, art, workshops | | Daily Total (Luxury) | $535-$1,000 | All-inclusive with CITA: from $828/day |

Midday: Lunch at a Gorée Island restaurant—fresh grilled fish, rice, and the ocean breeze as your backdrop.

Afternoon: Free time to explore the island. Visit art galleries, walk the cobblestone streets, photograph the pastel-colored colonial buildings. Or simply sit on the fort walls and look at the ocean.

Evening: Return to Dakar. Dinner at Le Lagon—a restaurant built on a pier extending over the Atlantic. Seafood platters, local wine, and the sun setting behind you.

Day 3: Dakar Discovery — Art, Culture & Markets

Morning (10 AM start): Museum of Black Civilizations—the most important museum on the African continent, housing 18,000 artifacts spanning the entire history of Black civilization globally.

Late Morning: Visit the African Renaissance Monument. Take the elevator to the observation deck for panoramic views of Dakar.

"The Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar is a landmark achievement in the global effort to preserve and present African cultural heritage. Its collection spans 6,000 years and represents the most comprehensive museum dedicated to Black civilization anywhere in the world." — African Union, Culture & Heritage Report, 2023

Afternoon: Guided tour of Sandaga Market and the Medina district. Shop for fabrics, jewelry, and handcrafted goods. Your guide helps with negotiations and cultural context.

Evening: Dinner at La Calebasse, featuring traditional Senegalese cuisine: thieboudienne, yassa, and pastels, with live kora (West African harp) music.

Day 4: Lac Rose & Saint-Louis Journey

Morning: Drive to Lac Rose (Pink Lake), approximately one hour from Dakar. The lake's rose-pink waters are caused by high concentrations of Dunaliella salga algae. Photograph the salt harvesters, walk along the shores, and take in one of Africa's most surreal landscapes.

Afternoon: Continue north toward Saint-Louis (approximately 3 hours). The drive passes through Senegal's countryside—cashew orchards, peanut fields, and small villages.

Evening: Arrive in Saint-Louis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of French West Africa. Check into our boutique hotel on the island. Dinner at a riverside restaurant with views of the Senegal River.

📊 Chart: Saint-Louis UNESCO Heritage — Key Facts Source: UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Saint-Louis Island Inscription | Feature | Detail | |---------|--------| | UNESCO Inscription Year | 2000 | | Historic Period | 17th-19th century | | Architectural Style | French colonial | | Population (island) | ~15,000 | | Annual Visitors | 85,000 | | Notable Event | Saint-Louis Jazz Festival (est. 1993) | | Conservation Status | Monitored (flooding risk) |

Day 5: Saint-Louis — Colonial History & Jazz

Morning: Walking tour of Saint-Louis' colonial architecture. The island city retains its 19th-century French character—wrought-iron balconies, pastel façades, and the iconic Faidherbe Bridge.

Midday: Lunch at a local restaurant specializing in river fish and Senegalese pastries.

Afternoon: Visit the Saint-Louis Jazz Museum (the city hosts Africa's oldest jazz festival). Explore the fishing village of Guet Ndar, where massive painted pirogues (wooden fishing boats) line the beach.

"Saint-Louis remains one of West Africa's most atmospheric cities. Its colonial architecture, vibrant arts scene, and the annual jazz festival make it an essential complement to any Senegal itinerary—a slower, more contemplative counterpoint to Dakar's urban energy." — The New York Times, 52 Places to Go, Africa Edition

Evening: Live music performance—Saint-Louis has one of the best live music scenes in West Africa.

Day 6: Return to Dakar — Teranga Experience

Morning: Leisurely drive back to Dakar with a stop at the Bandia Reserve—home to giraffes, rhinos, giant elands, and other wildlife. A guided safari drive takes approximately 90 minutes.

Afternoon: Return to the Terrou-Bi Hotel. Free time for spa treatments, pool time, or independent exploration.

Evening: Traditional Senegalese Teranga dinner—a home-hosted meal with a local family. This is where you experience Senegalese hospitality at its most intimate. Multiple courses, shared bowls, stories exchanged across languages with the help of our translator.

Day 7: Departure — Until We Return

Morning: Final breakfast at the Terrou-Bi. Ocean views, fresh pastries, and the kind of coffee that makes you consider moving to Dakar permanently.

Private transfer to Blaise Diagne International Airport.

You leave Senegal with a fuller understanding of West Africa, a phone full of photographs, and the echo of the Wolof farewell: Jërëjëf (thank you).
