Private island resorts are the pinnacle of luxury travel — and Seychelles has more of them per square mile than anywhere else in the Indian Ocean. But not all private islands are created equal. Some justify every dollar of their eye-watering rates; others trade on location alone. Here's my honest ranking after visiting all five.
1. North Island — The Gold Standard
From $5,000/night | 11 villas | Rating: 10/10
North Island isn't a hotel — it's a conservation project that happens to have 11 of the world's most beautiful villas. Each villa is built from local materials (takamaka wood, granite, palm thatch) with no two exactly alike. Your private beach is measured in hundreds of meters, not feet. The food is extraordinary — much of it grown on the island or caught that morning.
What sets North Island apart? Scale. 11 villas on a 201-hectare island means your ratio of private space is roughly 18 hectares per villa. That's not luxury — that's sovereignty.
According to Condé Nast Traveler: "North Island Seychelles is consistently ranked among the top 3 hotels in the world — a property where luxury, conservation, and privacy reach their absolute apex." (Source: CNT)
2. Six Senses Zil Pasyon — Félicité Island
From $2,500/night | 30 pool villas | Rating: 9/10
Six Senses' Seychelles outpost occupies the entire island of Félicité. The wellness programming is unmatched — personalized sleep programs, Ayurvedic treatments, and a spa literally built into the granite boulders. The 30 villas mean slightly less exclusivity than North Island but vastly more amenities.
3. Fregate Island Private
From $3,500/night | 16 villas | Rating: 9/10
A nature reserve first, luxury resort second. Fregate is home to 2,200 giant Aldabra tortoises, rare magpie robins, and seven beaches (with just 16 villas). The conservation pedigree is extraordinary, and the villas — each over 450 sq meters — are enormous.
4. Denis Private Island
From $800/night | 25 cottages | Rating: 8/10
The most accessible private island experience in Seychelles. Denis feels more "barefoot luxury" than "ultra-premium" — whitewashed cottages rather than designer villas. But the 1.8 km island is a bird sanctuary with exceptional snorkeling, and the pricing makes private-island Seychelles achievable for a broader audience.
The WTTC reports: "Private island tourism in the Indian Ocean has grown 52% since 2020, with Seychelles capturing the largest share of ultra-premium bookings." (Source: WTTC)
5. Cousine Island — Conservation Boutique
From $2,000/night | 4 villas | Rating: 8/10
Just four villas on an island that's primarily a nature reserve. Cousine is for travelers who want maximum isolation and minimum human interaction. The snorkeling is exceptional, the birdlife is world-class, and the silence is almost overwhelming.
How to Choose
| Priority | Best Pick | |----------|-----------| | Ultimate luxury | North Island | | Wellness focus | Six Senses | | Conservation passion | Fregate Island | | Budget-conscious | Denis Island | | Total isolation | Cousine Island |
Claire's Recommendation
For most travelers, Six Senses Zil Pasyon is the sweet spot — extraordinary luxury, world-class wellness, and enough amenities (restaurants, spa, pools, watersports) to fill a week. North Island is for the once-in-a-lifetime splurge. Denis is my pick for repeat visitors who want a more relaxed, less "produced" island experience.
