Coffee didn't come from a Starbucks—it came from the forests of southwestern Ethiopia, where legend says a goatherd named Kaldi noticed his goats dancing after eating red berries. Three thousand years later, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony remains one of the world's most beautiful rituals.
"The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is not about caffeine—it's about community, spirituality, and the art of slowing down." — James Hoffmann, The World Atlas of Coffee
The Ceremony
The traditional ceremony involves three rounds—Abol (first), Tona (second), and Baraka (blessing)—each progressively lighter. The entire process takes 2-3 hours, from green bean roasting to the final pour.
"In Ethiopia, coffee is never rushed. To rush coffee is to insult your host." — Taye Girma, Ethiopian Cultural Historian

Claire's Coffee Journey
I participated in a full ceremony in a small village outside Addis Ababa—sitting on grass, watching the jebena (clay pot) over charcoal, the room filling with incense and roasting coffee aroma. It was the most peaceful two hours of my entire trip. For my luxury travelers, I arrange private ceremonies at the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa or at a family home in the Entoto Hills. The experience is profound regardless of the setting.
